BERU f1systems' Commercial Vehicle TPMS is used to monitor the status of tyres fitted to a multi-wheeled vehicle. The system receives RF datagrams transmitted from sensors that are fitted inside the vehicle wheels. The datagrams contain information about the tyre pressure, tyre temperature and remaining sensor life.

Antennae mounted on the vehicle receive datagrams from the wheel sensors, and this data is transferred to the ECU. Up to six antennae can be fitted on the vehicle to ensure reliable reception of datagrams transmitted by the wheel sensors, in all operating conditions.

The data processed inside the TPMS ECU is then transmitted on the vehicle’s J1939 CAN bus. The information contained in the CAN messages is available to be processed by other systems on the vehicle.

The ECU has the ability to alert the driver to a number of different warnings. These include:

The wheel sensors are installed on the rim using a modified version of standard commercial vehicle wheel valves. This results in a straightforward installation process. The wheel sensors measure the pressure and temperature every 5 seconds and wirelessly transmit this data once a minute to the receiving antennae. If the sensor detects a pressure change greater than 0.4bar (5.8psi), it will enter a warning mode and transmit 255 datagrams at a rate of 1Hz. This allows the changing tyre pressure to be accurately reported back to the driver. The sensor is capable of measuring tyre pressures up to 13bar (188.5psi) gauge. The long life battery inside the sensor means it will last for five years in normal use.

The antenna’s rugged design makes it suitable for mounting in a wide range of locations on the vehicle, and with only three wires required for each antenna, the wiring harness dimensions are kept to a minimum.

The ECU can be operated from either a 12V or 24V supply, making it suitable for integration onto existing platforms.

The TPMS can also be used to monitor tyres on a trailer attached to the vehicle. The system is capable of automatically detecting when the trailer is attached to the vehicle, and automatically starts monitoring the tyres on the trailer.

Commercial Vehicle TPMS is also compatible with hand held support tools from BERU f1systems. The hand held tools allow technicians in service centres to see information about a particular tyre in a clear, easy to read format.
